Appointments at the Academic Support Centre
How an appointment time can be used
Many students make an appointment to discuss and 'workshop' a text they are currently working on. Through this, we hope you will not only improve your text, but improve overall as a writer and thinker. Texts can be a lab report, a final essay, a Statement of Purpose letter, a presentation, a Bachelor’s or Master’s thesis, or something else. Regardless of the type of text, the earlier in the writing process you set up an appointment, the better. You will have revisions to make after we meet, and you will want to have plenty of time before the deadline to make them. You might also want to make a follow-up appointment or two. In fact, we strongly encourage most students to make multiple follow-up appointments; the more you discuss you text, the better it will become.
We cannot read an entire thesis for one appointment, which is why we encourage you to make several appointments during the thesis-writing process. Each time you come, choose one section of text or prepare some questions you want to discuss with the consultant, and we’ll take it from there.
Appointment slots tend to fill up quickly, especially?mid- to late-semester, so book your spot well in advance of when you’d like to come in. If you’re bringing a specific assignment, we ask that you email a copy to the consultant at least 24 hours before your appointment time.
If you have comments on previous assignments from your professor, bring them too! We can sort them out together so that you avoid repeating similar mistakes.
Some students like to come early in the semester with their syllabus and reading list to make sense of it and plan their weekly study schedule. We also recommend this type of meeting if you start to feel overwhelmed with your reading list or work load at any point during the semester.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. Who visits the ASC? Is it only for students who need help with the basics?
All kinds of students at any level! Advanced and beginner writers, native and non-native English speakers, procrastinators, perfectionists – all these and others have visited the ASC.
2. What happens during a consultation about a text?
Together with the consultant you will assess where you are in the writing process, what has gone well and what could improve. Generally, you’ll focus on one or two areas to improve, because it’s difficult to cover everything in one session. The consultant acts as a sounding board and helps you think about writing in new ways. You will take away lots of ideas for revision, so make sure you have time in your schedule to revise before the deadline!
3. How can I find out if there is a workshop coming up?
Upcoming workshops will be announced on this webpage and advertised on our Twitter account. Spots are limited and can be reserved by emailing?english [dot] support [at] stu [dot] lu [dot] se.
4. Can I drop off a text to be proofread?
No. We do not provide drop-off text correction. If you want to improve your own proofreading skills, make an appointment and the consultant will discuss proofreading and editing strategies with you, using examples from your own text.
5. Will visiting the ASC affect my grade?
Simply visiting the ASC will not affect your grade. We hope that your writing and study skills will improve after each visit with us, which means that you will likely earn better grades on your assignments. Ultimately, your grades are your responsibility, and the ASC cannot predict or guarantee what grade an assignment will receive.?
